
Certified Clinical Supervisor of the Year
Dr. Matthew Mitchell
The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is proud to present Dr. Matthew Mitchell as the recipient of both the inaugural MCBAP CCS of the Year award and the IC&RC CCS award for 2024.
Dr. Matt Mitchell, Associate Professor of Social Work at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), stands as a leading voice in the field of addiction counseling, distinguished by decades of service, innovation, and transformative leadership. Dr. Mitchell brings together deep academic expertise and hands-on clinical leadership to shape the future of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and education.
His visionary role in SVSU’s Substance Use Disorder Project ECHO has connected over 1,600 clinicians across 42 states and three countries, amplifying best practices in addiction care and significantly improving outcomes in underserved communities. As a curriculum developer, lecturer, and expert team member, Dr. Mitchell has championed holistic, culturally responsive care through this nationally recognized tele-mentoring model.
Dr. Mitchell’s educational achievements reflect his enduring commitment to excellence. He holds a Master of Social Work with a clinical focus from the University of Michigan, a Doctorate in Health Care Administration, and the CCS and CAADC MCBAP. His doctoral research on integrated SUD treatment was published in the Journal of Public Health in 2020.
A consistent innovator, Dr. Mitchell developed SVSU’s new Behavioral Health – Substance Use and Dependency Minor. Designed to align with CAADC standards and accessible to students across multiple disciplines, the program reflects Dr. Mitchell’s interdisciplinary vision and workforce foresight.
Dr. Mitchell’s leadership extends beyond higher education. He founded Michigan’s first SUD clinic focused exclusively on adjudicated youth and later launched the state’s first geriatric-focused SUD clinic to address vital gaps in care with tailored, age-specific treatment. At SVSU, he co-founded the Center for Rural Behavioral Health and Addiction Studies, dedicated to improving outcomes in Michigan’s most underserved regions.
A respected researcher, Dr. Mitchell has co-authored recent manuscripts that model stigma-reduction training using individuals in recovery and highlight the impact of age-specific SUD care for older adults. These studies support both the advancement of the CAADC profession and the cultivation of compassion and competence among emerging practitioners.
In recognition of his leadership, Dr. Mitchell and the Project ECHO team were awarded SVSU’s Thomson Award for Empowering Learning in Community Engagement in 2022. This affirms his commitment to reciprocal, high-impact community partnerships.
Since 2012, Dr. Mitchell has also served as a clinical supervisor at Recovery Pathways, where he helped grow the organization from a single-site clinic to a multi-county network serving more than 1,000 clients. His mentorship has guided numerous professionals toward obtaining their CADC and CAADC credentials, ensuring a new generation of well-trained, compassionate clinicians.

Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor of the Year
Dr. Jonathan Cugini
The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is proud to present Dr. Jonathan Cugini, LMSW, CAADC as the recipient of both the inaugural MCBAP CAADC of the Year award and the IC&RC CAADC award for 2024.
Dr. Cugini is a Rehabilitation Counselor at the VA, Army Reserve Social Worker, a Commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a passionate advocate for veterans.
Dr. Cugini holds a Doctorate in Healthcare Management and Leadership, a master’s in social work, and a post-graduate certificate in addiction studies, completing continuing education far beyond what is required. He has published multiple journal articles and completed his dissertation on veteran support services.
Dr. Cugini’s innovative contributions include developing tailored mental health programs and veterans’ resource centers at institutions like the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University, which now serve as models nationwide. He also established workforce-aligned training programs at Washtenaw Community College, improving job placement for veterans.
His leadership and advocacy extend to his work on advisory boards, his role in securing legislative funding for veteran services, and his remote service with the University of Southern California Alumni Board. His efforts have resulted in expanded mental health programs, scholarships, and policy changes.
Professionally, Dr. Cugini has received numerous accolades, including the American Legion’s Medal of Merit and commendations from Veteran Affairs for his innovative rehabilitation services. He is also recognized for his pro bono addiction counseling for the VFW.
As a mentor and supervisor at the VA and in the Army Reserve, Dr. Cugini prepares the next generation of counselors and provides invaluable support to soldiers managing mental health and addiction issues.

Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor of the Year
Mark Nowaczewski
The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is proud to present Mark Nowaczewski, LLMSW, CADC as the recipient of the inaugural Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) Award.
Mark, an outpatient therapist at Lakeside Professional Counseling has a focus on supporting individuals struggling with substance use disorders, depression, grief, anxiety, anger management, and trauma. A U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Mark’s decision to become a social worker stems from his desire to help others overcome the challenges these disorders present. His experience and compassion are evident in the relationships he builds with his clients, many of whom have shared heartfelt compliments about the positive impact he has made on their lives. Jessica Johnson Lentz, Owner of Lakeside Professional Counseling, emphasizes, “Mark goes above and beyond with our clients and works harder than the paycheck he earns.”
Mark is also the lead therapist at Guest House, providing residential treatment to Catholic priests suffering from substance use and mental health disorders. Mark’s therapeutic approach is collaborative and client-centered, drawing on evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and a 12-Step foundation framework. His work has spanned various treatment facilities, where he has supported individuals and families in addressing behavioral health issues. Mark’s focus is on empowering clients to harness their natural strengths and develop coping abilities to navigate a healthier and more fulfilling future.
Jessica further notes, “He is kind, demonstrates leadership, and operates with integrity,” which is evident in his advocacy for clients and his willingness to support colleagues through supervision and mentoring. Mark’s commitment to professional growth, as seen in his continued education in DBT and his leadership in the field, makes him a role model for others in the profession.

Certified Prevention Consultant of the Year
John Kroneck
The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is proud to present John Kroneck, LPC, CPC as the recipient of the inaugural Certified Prevention Consultant (CPC) Award.
John has dedicated nearly four decades to advancing substance use disorder prevention and recovery support in his community. As the Health Promotion Supervisor at the Mid-Michigan District Health Department, John has been a prevention specialist since 1985, working tirelessly to develop and implement effective prevention programs in Montcalm County. His initiatives range from classroom education and community volunteer training to fostering coalitions such as the Montcalm Prevention Collaborative and supporting the recovery community through the Montcalm Recovery and Integrated Systems of Care (RISC).
John’s extensive educational background includes two master’s degrees from Central Michigan University in Public Health Education and Counseling and Personal Development. He has been instrumental in evolving prevention efforts in Montcalm County, including the successful procurement of over $1.5 million in Drug Free Communities grants. He is the co-founder and former president of the Montcalm Area Hospice.
John’s leadership extends beyond his immediate work. He serves on the Michigan Prevention Association (MPA) Board as Treasurer and manages the MPA Advocacy Blast email communication. John serves on the MCBAP Prevention Committee, the Sheridan Community Hospital Community Advisory Board and various local organizations. John’s commitment to mentoring the next generation of prevention professionals has made him a respected figure in his field.
In addition to his professional work, John is the author of “Reiki Energetics: Energetic Theories & Practices for Healing & Wellness”, and he was named the Michigan Prevention Association’s Preventionist of the Year in 2012.

Certified Prevention Specialist of the Year
Elizabeth Cupolo
The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is proud to present Elizabeth Cupolo as the recipient of the inaugural Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) Award.
Elizabeth is a dedicated and innovative leader in the field of prevention. As a team member at CARE of Southeastern Michigan, Elizabeth has been instrumental in supporting her colleagues and the community. With a Master’s in Public Health, a Bachelor’s in Public Health and Women and Gender Studies, and her Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) certification, Elizabeth has brought her expertise and passion to the forefront of prevention work.
Elizabeth’s leadership is exemplified by her initiative to support colleagues in passing the CPS exam. Elizabeth was the first current prevention staff member at her office to pass the exam and took it upon herself to develop resources, including study guides, flashcards, and practice questions. She also organized study groups to ensure her teammates were prepared, leading to five additional team members passing the exam. She has been praised for her willingness to mentor new employees, helping them adapt to the world of substance use prevention.
Elizabeth is a visible presence in the community, often promoting the Sterling Heights Drug Free Coalition at health fairs and other events. Her innovation also shines through her personal initiative, “Strawberry Week,” which provides menstrual products and support to those in need. Her devotion to both her workplace and community makes her a respected and admired leader.

Certified Peer Recovery Mentor of the Year
Sandy Arnold Jr.
The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) is proud to present Sandy Arnold, Jr., CPRM, CADC-DP as the recipient of the inaugural Certified Peer Recovery Mentor (CPRM) Award.
He is recognized for his outstanding commitment to supporting individuals with substance use disorders. As a Sobriety House Peer Recovery Coach working at DMC-Receiving Hospital, he has been instrumental in bridging the gap between emergency department interventions and long-term residential treatment. The outcome of this work has been truly outstanding. It has resulted in 75% of the 1834 individuals screened through Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) being admitted to treatment programs.
Mr. Arnold has over 20 years of personal long-term recovery and 17 years of professional experience. His dedication extends beyond the hospital, as he leads a successful outpatient recovery group twice a week while working tirelessly to provide recovery support in both hospital and residential settings.
Mr. Arnold’s leadership is evident in his advocacy for harm reduction and his role as a spiritual guide. He regularly educates medical staff at DMC on the importance of peer services and the unique challenges faced by individuals with substance use disorders. Additionally, he has mentored and trained over 15 peer recovery professionals, fostering a new generation dedicated to making a difference in the field.
Mr. Arnold’s work has been recognized by both Sobriety House and DMC for his outstanding achievements and dedication. We are honored to recognize Mr. Arnold as he continues to inspire others through his commitment to recovery, personal wellness, and professional development, He is a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
