Kristie R. Schmiege, CCS, CADC, CPC-M
Member, MCBAP Board of Directors
“I am a passionate and tireless advocate promoting the importance of specialty substance use disorder certification for peer coaches, counselors/therapists, clinical supervisors and preventionists that serve individuals, families and communities across Michigan.”
Kristie Schmiege, CCS, CADC, CPC-M has been a valuable and pivotal member of the MCBAP Board of Directors for over 30 years. Kristie was selected to the Michigan “Advisory” Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MACBAP), then part of State government, in the fall of 1992. She became a founding member of the new, non-profit MCBAP board, signing the founding documents in 1996. She served in all 4 officer roles for 2 terms each along with many committees including creating standards for MCBAP’s 2-tiered prevention credential. She continues to actively participate in committee work.
In the mid-2000’s, Kristie chaired a statewide committee of key stakeholders from various sectors that recommended that all Michigan SUD professionals in agencies receiving federal/state funding be certified. The recommendations were accepted by State officials and committee leadership was handed over to State staff, but Kristie remained a dedicated member of the group through its development of contract and implementation language. As a result, Michigan SUD professionals working in publicly funded agencies are required to be certified or documented to be working toward a SUD credential.
Kristie has also represented MCBAP as a delegate to our parent organization, the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), for 30 years. She was elected treasurer during IC&RC’s most challenging financial time, running unopposed out of commitment to its mission and important role for its member boards. Kristie served as chair of the Clinical Supervisor, Finance, and Credentialing Services Committees, placing her in elected or appointed leadership as part of the executive committee. She also chaired several ad hoc task forces and continues to participate in numerous committees.
Currently, Kristie serves as the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence – Greater Detroit Area, working part time to afford her the opportunity to spend a cherished day per week with her granddaughters. In addition to volunteering with MCBAP and IC&RC, Kristie is a Governor’s appointee to the Michigan Opioids Task Force, where she is the Co-lead of the Prevention Pillar Subcommittee. She is a member of Michigan’s Behavioral Health Advisory Committee for which she was elected secretary, vice chair and chair, serving the maximum terms for each role.
Kristie holds a BS in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of Michigan-Flint and an MPH from the U of M School of Public Health-Ann Arbor. She offers a wealth of experience and institutional knowledge of not only MCBAP and IC&RC, but of Michigan’s publicly funded (Medicaid and federal block grant) SUD managed care system, adapting through its numerous transitions. She has been developing and/or overseeing evidence-based programs as a funder or in a service provider capacity of prevention, treatment, and peer recovery in SUD, co-occurring, mental health, and integrated primary care services.
Outside of work, Kristie has been married to Charles for over 40 years (together since 15 and 17). They love spending time with their family and friends. They enjoy travel and seek history, art, architecture, scenery (urban/aquatic/mountain), hiking, music, theatre and learning about other cultures.
Kristie serves because she is tenacious about helping people, believes strongly that Michiganders and people around the U.S. and world deserve services from professionals that have attained specialty SUD credentials, and because she is a true believer that individual and system change is possible.
