CPRM - Certified Peer Recovery Mentor
Overview of Requirements
This credential is for individuals working as part of a clinical treatment or recovery support services team. It is not an independent practice credential. The primary focus of the CPRM is on alcohol/drug use recovery. However, personal recovery history and experience may include areas other than alcohol or drug dependency recovery; with peer mentors providing support only with clients of common experience.
Experience
500 hours, full- or part-time providing alcohol or drug addiction peer recovery support services at a program licensed by the State of Michigan as a substance use disorder service provider, or MCBAP-approved alternative provider. Refer to “Experience” section in the application instructions for further explanation.
General Education
All applicants must be able to provide verification of the completion of a High School or GED diploma, or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
Education
46 education hours of education in Peer Recovery support within the areas defined by the IC&RC Peer Recovery Performance Domains. Refer to “Education” section in the application instructions for further explanation.
Summary:
- A minimum of 10 hours specific to Advocacy knowledge and skills.
- A minimum of 10 hours specific to Mentoring and Education knowledge and skills.
- A minimum of 10 hours specific to Recovery processes and Wellness planning.
- A minimum of 16 hours must be specific to Ethical Responsibility knowledge and skills.
- Applicants must complete at least six (6) hours of MCBAP-approved recovery support or other behavioral health practice ethics and decision-making study course(s) within the 16 hours.
Supervision
25 hours of direct supervision performing peer recovery mentor functions related to the IC&RC Peer Recovery Performance Domains with a minimum of 5 hours in each Domain. Refer to “Supervision” section in the application instructions for further explanation.
Testing
IC&RC/PR, Peer Recovery examination
Code of Ethics
Sign and adhere to the current MCBAP Recovery Mentor Code of Ethical Standards.
Residency
Must live or work within the State of Michigan fifty-one (51%) percent of the time.
Application
When all requirements have been completed, submit your CPRM application to MCBAP for review. All documentation must be on copies of the forms provided and in the format specified in the application forms and instructions. Please note, all requirements must have been completed within the previous ten years of submitting the application.
Fee
Submit the non-refundable application fee.
Initial Certification
Once approved, the initial CPRM certification period will be for two (2) years.
Renewal
Renewal at the end of the two (2) year period requires submission of the Renewal Application and proof of completion of at least 20 hours of continuing education, with at least 10 hours being SUD specific, and at least 6 hours in ethics.
Recovery Status
This credential is designed for and intended for persons who have been successful in their own recovery, and are prepared to share their experience and knowledge with others at an earlier stage of recovery from alcohol and/or drug use, mental illness, and stress disorders working as part of an organized clinical team. A statement of personal commitment to recovery is required. A minimum period of continued recovery over the past two or more years is expected.
Application Process
All applications are completed in the Certemy platform. Once approved, the initial certification period is valid for a two year period.
